In the Cree language, waapaau means “white.” White like snow.

It is often said that the Inuit, the Innu, the Cree, and other Indigenous peoples of northern Canada have a hundred words to describe white. The myth isn’t entirely true: it’s not about a hundred specific words, but rather about a language capable of generating countless nuanced forms to talk about the shades of white and the types of snow. This highlights the importance of this color in a landscape where white is everywhere—not just as a background, but as a living, shifting, meaningful presence.

In Waapaau, I draw from this omnipresence to explore white through photography. The white of snow becomes a passe-partout for framing—like in a Japanese print—or a vast blank canvas for playing with shapes, volumes, and the silence of non-white elements. Every branch, every footprint, every distant figure gains identity within this luminous expanse.

I search for nuances, for those whites that call to be named. It is through these fragments of silence that white reveals its voice.
